Abstract

The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a very important document that represents a complete transformation of India's school system to deliver quality education under with the aspirational goals required for 21st century education upholding the foundations of India's tradition and cultural values. Under NEP-2020 it is aimed to universalize education in school education. Structure of schooling like 5+3+3+4 instead of 10+2, priority to ECCE, basic literacy and numeracy, curricular goals, importance of multilingualism, change in assessment system, equitable and inclusive education, school governance and benchmarking of school education. has been included. Apart from this, under NEP 2020, different roles are to be played by the teacher in school education. These include teacher as national policy, recruitment and tenure, in-service work culture and environment, greater autonomy for teachers in curriculum selection, continuing professional development (CPD), , professional standards for teachers, teachers for special needs students and teacher training. The teacher has to play the role of an ideal friend, philosopher and guide in matters such as approach etc. The new education policy envisages teachers to regain their honourable guruship. Thus, under NEP-2020, teachers have a vital role to play in preparing future citizens who can face global challenges.
